NEW DELHI: Twitter is bringing about a much needed change in its policy to deal with offensive or abusive Tweets that violates its code of conduct. With this upcoming change, Twitter users can no longer simply delete and get away with offensive content.

Twitter will now categorically highlight the tweets that has been forcibly taken down after users reported against them. Twitter says that with this change, other Twitter users will get to know whether an offensive tweet that violates Twitter’s policy was forcibly taken down or was simply deleted by the person who had tweeted it.

“When we determine that a Tweet violates the Twitter Rules, we require the violator to delete it before they can Tweet again. Now, once we’ve required a Tweet to be deleted, we will display a notice stating that the Tweet is unavailable because it violated the Twitter Rules along with a link to the Rules and an article that provides more detail on how we enforce our rules,” explained Sam Toizer, product manager, Twitter in the company’s official blog.

Usually when something controversial is tweeted by a popular Twitter user, it becomes difficult for other general Twitter users to understand whether Twitter has taken any action against offensive content or not. Having said that Twitter does suspend accounts that violates its code of conduct This move is expected to bring much needed clarity and accountability.

“This notice will be displayed on both the account’s profile and the specific Tweet for 14 days after the Tweet is deleted,” added Toizer. So, the next time before you Tweet something remember this notice visible to everyone could some embarrassment for at least 14 days.

Meanwhile, Twitter is already testing out a new feature to enhance the experience of the news feed by enabling “way to switch between a timeline of tweets that are most relevant for you and a timeline of the latest tweets”.
